Subjects are the nouns doing the action in the sentence. Predicates are the verbs/action. Let's take a look... He ran. What is the subject? HE What is the predicate? RAN He ran to the store. What is the subject? HE What is the predicate? RAN TO THE STORE What is "to the store"? a prepositional phrase. What word in the sentence does "to the store" modify? It tells WHERE he RAN. Since it modifies a verb, it is an adverb phrase which makes is part of the complete predicate. After the movie he ran to the store. What is the subject? HE What is the simple predicate? RAN What is the complete predicate? AFTER THE MOVIE RAN TO THE STORE What is "after the movie"? a prepositional phrase. What word does "after the movie" modify? It tells WHERE he RAN. Since it modifies a verb, it is an adverb phrase and is part of the complete predicate. After the movie he ran to the store to shop. Here is a little bonus... What is "to shop"? an INFINITIVE Can you ever pick the verb of a sentence from an infinitive? NO! It is part of the complete predicate though. Here is some practice for Monday night's homework. We started a close read today in class. This is when you read a selection VERY CLOSELY. It is about the Great Fire in Chicago. Students have a green, laminated bookmark with symbols to use in order to mark their reading selections. They should circle unfamilar words and look up the meanings and write the definition on their papers. They should mark important words by underlinging them. They should place a question mark next to something they might not fully understand...and several more.
Here is a copy of the text. If students didn't complete their study of the text today in class, they need to finish it tonight in order to answer questions about it in class on Thursday.
We are starting to review Subjects and Predicates. Here is a 5th grade quiz. Take it and see how you do. If you don't do so hot, you REALLY need to pay attention in class and do your practice homework EVERY NIGHT in order to be ready for the quiz on Friday.
