Conclusion Paragraph
Summary Sentence – In conclusion it is imperative that rainforests are allowed to flourish in order to clean the atmosphere, to allow animal species to live freely, and to continue to provide medical assistance through renewable resources in the plants. Call to action – There are many ways to support the world’s rainforests. People can do their own research, purchase products that do not affect the rainforests, donate to rainforest conservation programs, and recycle paper products. Give a recommendation - It is vital that society preserve the world’s rainforests. Everyone must take part.
Here is a body paragraph with just details and explanations along with a body paragraph that includes a counter claim.
I have also included a PDF with transition words you should be using. Body Paragraph 1 Topic sentence – Everyone on the planet needs oxygen to breathe. Reason/fact/detail - According to sciencing.com 40% of all the oxygen we breathe comes from rain forests (Curley). Explain – That is almost half of all the oxygen people need. The rain forests are almost 20% smaller now than they were 50 years ago. If the forests disappear, the oxygen disappears. Reason/fact/detail - Sciencing.com also explains that in 2011 only about 14% of the carbon dioxide was removed by trees (Curley). Explain – Trees remove the bad parts and create the needed parts of the atmosphere people breathe. Conclusion – The rainforests are an essential part of life for every living thing on the planet. Body Paragraph #2 Topic sentence – In addition to creating oxygen, rainforests create a habitat for thousands of species. Reason/fact/detail – Urbanization, or creating towns and cities, is taking place where rainforests used to grow. Explain – Rainforests are being cut down for Palm oil plantations in Africa, Latin America, and Asia. Humans are moving in to use the land for production. Orangutans, tigers, elephants, and rhinos are losing food and shelter because of the human take over (WWF). Counterclaim – Although many believe urbanization is a must, humans have plenty of space for themselves in towns and cities that are already created. Response - Farming can take place in locations that are already established, and crops can be rotated yearly or every other year. Conclusion – It only takes the extinction of one animal to affect all the thousands of others. Hook - According to the World Wildlife Fund 31% of the world is covered in forest and 1.6 billion people rely on the trees.
Transition sentence - Currently forests are being cleared for farming, ranching, and logging. They are also being destroyed by fire. Today’s forests are quickly vanishing. Thesis - Deforestation needs to stop because animal and plant habitats are disappearing, the forests are producing less oxygen needed for the atmosphere, and plant species are providing new medical breakthroughs. Here's another example: I. Introduction (Attention-Getter/Hook): What does it take to be a team player? Athletes need to do their best while respecting others, themselves, and their bodies. Description of Issue: Athletes who use illegal drugs or prescription drugs in the wrong way lack respect for anyone, allowing for greater injuries to themselves, teammates, and other players. Thesis Statement: Student athletes should go through random drug testing allowing coaches to look for pain medications, performance enhancement drugs, and to encourage students to remain drug free all while reminding us how important it is to “play clean.” STEP FOUR - Writing a hook: Identify your audience (me) How do you want your audience to feel? Write a hook that stimulates the types of feelings you want your audience to have. What do you want your audience to take away? You want them to be better educated on a certain topic, or that you want them to question reality, or that you want them to believe in love again. 1.Tell a humorous anecdote (story). 2. Reveal a startling fact or statistic. 3. Give an inspirational quote. Example: According to World Wildlife Fund 31% of the world is covered in forests and 1.6 billon people rely on those forests. (World Wildlife Fund) I want you to be surprised at how many people depend on the trees!
Use the outline file above to help you write your introduction paragraph. The transition sentences are just background information about your topic. Don't start writing the actual argument yet. Just share some basic information.
STEP THREE - Hey all. Missed you guys today. Hopefully you worked on writing your counterclaims. I was trying to save a tree and only put one page for counter claims. I used two ink colors to write mine, but you can always write it on notebook paper. Staple it to your packet though. You don't want to lose it. When you write your counter claims, you need to decide what body paragraph it will go in. You can't just randomly throw them in. They need to match the information in the paragraph. Let me know if you need help!
STEP TWO - research the three items you have to back up your claim from yesterday. Also research the two opposing arguments. Use the three boxes in your packet (I posted the worksheet below) to write down the most important research you find. MAKE SURE TO WRITE DOWN THE URL SOMEWHERE IN EACH BOX, SO YOU CAN GO BACK TO THE WEBSITE!!! After all three boxes are full of research, use the empty space to research the two counter claims. Make sure you write the WHOLE URL. Click on the URL and use the arrow keys to scroll to the right and see your whole URL. Make sure you write everything including slashes and underscores. ALSO make sure you highlight the sentence that you would want to use in your paragraph as a citation. On-level must have 2 citations and advanced must have 3 citations.
Hi All! Here is a quick video I put together to show you how to get to the databases if you need it. The log in is just the same as logging into the computer. Today we started our research. 1st period, we did things a bit different from the other classes, but work on the worksheet in your packet to help you come up with a thesis. The worksheet is posted below. Everyone should be working on research. 1. Choose a topic - mine was deforestation 2. Find pros and cons - fill in the boxes with as many good and bad things about your topic. 3. Establish a position on your claim. Are you for your topic or against it? I'm against deforestation. 4. Find three items in your research to help support the way you feel about your topic. Write those three things in the three blanks on the worksheet. These will be your three body paragraphs. NOTE THESE MIGHT CHANGE AS YOU DO MORE RESEARCH! My three items are 1. the rain forest is a habitat to many plant and animal species. 2. The rain forest provides oxygen for the planet. 3. Plant species are providing medical breakthroughs. 5. Draw a second line under "what is the opposing argument?" You need to write two. These would come from the other box above that you haven't used yet. For example my topic is deforestation, and I am against it. I want it to stop. The two items I found against it is 1.that there are economic benefits from the timber which provides jobs. Also I found 2.that it is providing more space for humans to grow and live in towns and eventually cities. 6. We'll work on writing the final thesis later in the paper once all research is done. Leave the last item THESIS blank. Also just so we're clear, you may NOT use my thesis. Yours needs to be original to you.
