Grammar Train!
Toot-Toot! Verbals A verbal is a word that is formed from a verb but is used as a noun, adjective, or an adverb. There are three kinds of verbals. The Participle A verb form that can be used as an adjective
The Gerund A verb form ending in –ing that is used as a noun A gerund can do all the jobs a noun can do. It can function as a subject, predicate nominative, direct object, indirect object, or object of a preposition.
The Infinitive A verb form that can be used as a noun, an adjective, or an adverb. Most infinitives consist of the word to followed by a verb – to giggle, to wiggle, to hobble, to gobble, etc. Caution: Do not mistake a prepositional phrase beginning with to for an infinitive! To followed by a noun or pronoun is a prepositional phrase, and to followed by a verb form is an infinitive.
